Dinner First or a One Night Stand

November 19, 20222 min read

Do you qualify your people before you send them a DM or get on a call?

If not, I have a perfect example today of why it's important to do so. I received two DM's this morning that were the two top reasons to Qualify your potential clients and practice Relationship Marketing.

The first message was from someone I had received a free service from as part of a challenge. She felt that since she had provided a service I was obligated in some way... Kind of like she bought me dinner so now I should...

I knew I was not a fit for her service, but I didn't want to appear ungrateful. Well she followed up today, over 30 days later, to see what I thought. I said it hadn't proved valuable to my business and that I was not interested in further services. I tried to be gentle, indicated I wasn't her ideal client, and offered to help her narrow her niche so that she doesn't spend time offering her services to people that were not her ideal client. She felt insulted and frustrated, and became insulting.

My point is that if she had researched me at all before the spiritual guidance session she would have learned that I have very traditional faith and the only criteria I met towards being her ideal client was that I was female, and possibly had money. She even informed me that she had taken a marketing course and learned that serving is key not sales, and I would do well to build relationships first.......

My second message was all about what I call one night stand marketing; she friended me and sent her pitch at the same time. Her profile was brand new as of April this year, and her web link wasn't working. I pointed out better practices and offered free help to help her get better results. She said she was indeed brand new, but didn't respond to my offer. I will keep her in my pipeline and nurture her along. You never know what will happen!

In total 100 % transparency, I was very tempted to get a bit snarky and climb up on my soap box, but I knew that would not help them or myself in any way, so I opted for gentle truth, the benefit of the doubt, and free consultation. If any of you have a more diplomatic way of handling the unwanted free service, I would love the input!
